St Julian’s UCA Townhouse Could Become 5-Storey Hotel: ‘Turning Our Village Into Construction Site Is Unacceptable’
A 5-storey, 53-room hotel could replace an iconic St Julian’s townhouse according to plans submitted to the Planning Authority.
According to the application, the facade will still be retained in the three-star hotel. However, works will demolish its interior and garden.
The application was submitted by Andrea Zammit Tabona with Edwin Mintoff serving as the architect.
The site is located just behind the City of London bar and is one of the few remaining classicly designed buildings in the area.
“Another townhouse in Main Street, St Julian’s and within UCA area to be turned into a hotel ?” Mayor Albert Buttigieg wrote on social media, referencing recent reports that Malta’s supply of hotels far outweighs the number of tourists visiting the country.
“Demolishing this period townhouse/gardens and constructing another soulless hotel is yet another loophole provided by the PA. According to policy, no development is allowed within UCA, except in Sliema and St Julian’s but only to build hotels/guesthouses!”
“This is a stepping stone. Once build, the owner – Zammit Tabona – will request a change of use for residential units! By now, we know your dirty tricks!”
“Turing our core village into one construction site is not acceptable! “
