St Paul’s Bay boasts the largest community of non-heterosexual people in Malta, however, Gżira has been dubbed the island’s gayest town, according to data from 2021.

St Paul’s Bay hosts 1,009 LGBTIQ+ people, but, that’s only 3.6% of the town’s population. Meanwhile, Gżira, with an LGBTIQ+ population of 509 individuals,  emerges as the locality with the highest percentage of non-heterosexuals – 5.4%.

That means, around one in 20 who lived in Gżira in 2021 have identified as gay, lesbian, or other non-heterosexual orientations, according to data from the National Statistics Office and acquired by Malta Today.

Meanwhile, Marsalforn registered the highest amount of LGBTIQ+ people in Gozo with 2.9% of its population.

Within the whole population of Gozo, only 1.8% identified as being a part of the queer community in this census. This translates to 605 members of the LGBTIQ+ community which include 256 Maltese citizens and 349 foreigners.

Żebbuġ, which includes Marsalforn, registers the highest percentage of LGBTIQ+ people (2.9%).

Moreover, the study shows that in 2021, 11,073 LGBTIQ+ people were living in Malta – 5,349 were Maltese citizens, while 5,724 were foreign. Most of the foreign members of this community gravitated toward the Northern Harbour while a significant amount of LGBTIQ+ locals were concentrated in the South.
