University of Malta has pushed back against claims that a professor was transferred to another faculty due to her pro-choice beliefs.

“With respect to Prof. Isabel Stabile’s testimony in Court in the Prudente case as reported in the media, the University of Malta would like to state that, according to its records, the transfer of Prof.Stabile from the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery was not motivated in any way by her Pro-Choice stance,” UoM said.

“The University allows, and indeed encourages, it’s academics to form and express opinions about any issues without fear of retribution.”

Their comments come after a court sitting where Stabile, a prominent pro-abortion activist and gynaecologist, appeared in court in relation to the Andrea Prudente abortion case.

During the court case, Stabile said she was “ostracised” after making her beliefs public, and was moved from the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery to the Faculty of Dental Surgery.

Stabile has been at the forefront of raising awareness over safe access to abortion, even ingesting an abortion pill in public.
