The commencement of the upcoming school semester has been postponed for students attending the secondary school of the St Albert The Great College in Valletta.

This comes after a number of resignations flooded in following the dismissal of former headmaster Mario Mallia.

“Over the past few weeks, despite the administration’s best efforts, setbacks have been experienced in the preparation for the opening of this scholastic year due to data being withheld from the College’s administration,” the school said in a statement.

“Thanks to collective efforts, over the past hours the rector and the new head of the Secondary school have finalised the timetable for the year, and only a few preparations remain.”

“In this light, the administration of the College, in collaboration with the Secretariat for Catholic Education and the Quality Assurance Department (QAD) within the Ministry of Education, is postponing the opening of the Secondary School to Wednesday 28th September.”

Meanwhile, students at the primary school of the college are set to begin on 27th September as initially planned.

“Our students remain our topmost priority, whilst renewing our commitment to our duty towards each member of our community,” it said.

Just yesterday, the Office of the Commissioner for Children expressed its concern about the current situation at St Albert the Great College in Valletta, warning it is affecting students negatively.

Moments later, the college slapped the Malta Union of Teachers with a court warrant to avoid them from issuing any further directives.

Over the last few weeks, more than eight educators have resigned from St Albert The Great College, following the dismissal of former headmaster Mario Mallia.

Parents have also spoken out about the situation, lamenting the lack of organisation and fearful of their children’s future.

Just last week, Horace Gauci was announced as the new headmaster of the college, former mayor of Marsaxlokk and an educator by profession.

The Curia has also announced it is preparing a contingency plan in case the college is not in a position to function next week.

St Albert The Great College has also accused the Malta Union of Teachers of “recklessly sabotaging” efforts to kick off the upcoming scholastic year.
