Stay Safe Malta: Islands Wake Up To Warnings Of ‘Very Strong’ Winds And 7-Metre Waves

If you were hoping for a calm and sunny start to spring in Malta, we’ve got some bad news. The following couple of days will not only feature isolated showers and the potential return of thunder, but are also set to include the much-hated strong winds that have been way more than a simple nuisicane this year.

In an overnight post by Facebook forecasting page It-Temp Madwarna, an issued warning explained how, over the next 24 hours (at the very least), the strong Grigal (that’s East Northeast) winds will be returning to the islands, with powerful Force 7 and even Force 8 gusts.

“Avoid leaving cars under large trees or next to the shore, along with small boats in ports where the wind is notoriously effective, especially near Sliema, Valletta and Marsaskalam” the page urged its followers.

The strong winds are also expected to create seven-metre waves, which might explain why the Gozo Channel Line is expected to operate from the Paradise Bay South Quay instead over the next day.

The warning was put out for all of today, along with the first half of tomorrow. The wind is expected to be the strongest overnight

The Malta Airport weather forecast page echoes the sentiment, also showing thundery showers for the start of spring’s first weekend.

In fact, the site has its own ‘yellow’ weather warning issued for the wind, detailed how the wind will be “strong in places, gradually becoming strong to very strong over the Maltese Islands”. And even though this particular warning is currently valid till 5pm today, the site did say the warning “will be renewed accordingly”, most probably in anticipation of the intensifying winds overnight.

Between today’s 18°C highs and Friday’s 12°C lows (both of which will no doubt feel colder on account of the strong winds), isolated showers might feature throughout the next couple of days, with Friday also potentially bringing thunder with it. This might also repeat itself on Saturday, with Sunday looking like a rainy end to the first weekend of spring. Guess we’re going to have to wait a bit longer for that picnic!
