Project Green CEO Steve Ellul has announced his resignation from the role ahead of his expected candidature as a Labour Party candidate for the European Parliament election.

After months of rumours, Ellul – an asset manager by profession – confirmed the move today, around a year after he became the government agency’s first CEO.

“A year ago, I was offered the challenge of leading Project Green and I accepted it with a lot of responsibility and humility,” he said.

“Today is the last day of this chapter in my life that I can describe as an emotional voyage that filled me with a lot of satisfaction.”

Project Green was formed after the last general election as part of the PL government’s pre-electoral pledge to spend €700 million on creating new green spaces in built-up areas.

Ellul said Project Green has already created open spaces the size of six football grounds, in places like Birżebbuġa, Mosta, Gudja, Ħal Safi, Marsaskala, Ħaż-Żabbbar, Kalkara, Qrendi, and Ta’ Qali.

It has also embarked on a process to convert parking spaces inBormla and San Ġwann into open spaces.

Ellul will become the PL’s sixth MEP candidate, joining current MEP Alex Agius Saliba, Daniel Attard, Jesmond Bonello, Marija Sara Vella Gafa, and Clint Azzopardi Flores.
