Ħaż-Żebbuġ officially has two independent councillors; environment and cycling activist Steve Zammit Lupi as well as his mother Lilibeth.
“Żebbuġ today elected two independent councillors – my mother and me. This means that in Żebbuġ no party has won a majority of seats. I feel honoured to have been elected with a record number of votes of 2,342. I have no words!” Steve wrote on Facebook.
“THANK YOU – we made history. Today Żebbuġ won!”
They contested against seven PL candidates and five PN candidates for nine spots on the council, which was run by the Labour Party. Now, neither party holds a majority.
Although he got the most votes by far, it is uncertain whether he will be mayor as he may need to form a coalition with either the PN or PL councillors to hold a majority of the council.
Here’s a breakdown of the candidates who received the most votes per party:
PL’s Joseph Agius – 844 votes
PN’s Paul Mazzola – 543 votes
Independent Steve Zammit Lupi – 2,342 votes
Collectively, the independents got 2,532 votes, PL got 3,209 votes, and PN received 2,178 votes.
Well done to both Lilibeth and Steve!
