Stop Blaming Ukraine War For Cost Of Living Spike, PN MP Urges In Call For ‘Radical’ Solutions

Nationalist MP Ivan Bartolo has called for “radical” solutions to combat the cost of living crisis, warning that people living in poverty are tired of hearing authorities blaming the Ukraine war for their woes.

“We keep hearing excuses that [the cost of living spike] is because we’re in a post-Covid situation or because of the war in Ukraine and that it has increased at a higher rate overseas,” Bartolo told Parliament last night.

“This type of reasoning bothers everyone, especially those people who are falling through a well of knives. The cost of living has increased for everyone but the salaries of some people have remained static.”

Bartolo said people in poverty are being skinned alive from all angles and cited a real-world example he encountered personally.

“I know a woman who needed to buy something essential for her home and prepared a cheque in advance – less than €100 – because she knew that her salary was coming in a week’s time. However, because she was been thrown in a well of knives, she was fined €30 because her salary didn’t arrive on time.”

“It’s a society and a world that eats you alive. If this woman doesn’t pay something from one day to the next, the axe will fall on you immediately. Meanwhile, if you need to sign something at a bank, they take interest from you and make sure the biro is attached to a string so you don’t steal it.”

Bartolo said that “radical” solutions must be found to tackle the root of poverty, which he said is the result of greed and egoism within a free market.

“Something must be done because everyone is increasing prices without any kind of control. When you confront certain people, they keep bringing up the excuse of the Ukraine war which, wonder of wonders, appears to be the source of blame for everything.”

“We are taking people for a ride, and rather than having a fair society, we are entering into a social conflict.”
