Street Cleaning To Shift To Off-Peak Hours In New Agreement Aimed At Easing Traffic

A new agreement has been signed to ensure that street cleaning on Malta’s arterial and distributor roads takes place during off-peak hours, a move aimed at reducing traffic congestion and improving public service efficiency.
The agreement, signed between Transport Malta and the Cleansing and Maintenance Division, was announced during the Public Service Expo 2025.
It forms part of the government’s “Reshaping Our Mobility” initiative, which seeks to improve how Malta handles road usage and traffic flow.
Under the new schedule, road cleaning will not be carried out between 6am and 9am or 4pm and 7pm on weekdays, nor between 9am and 1pm on Saturdays.
The goal is to reduce the impact of roadworks on traffic during the busiest hours of the day.
Transport Minister Chris Bonett acknowledged that such changes aren’t always easy to implement as they require shifts in worker routines, but said the agreement showed what’s possible when there is cooperation and goodwill.
“This is another step toward a mobility system that better serves our citizens,” Bonett said, adding that government is setting an example for the private sector to make better use of a 24-hour economy.
Parliamentary Secretary Glenn Bedingfield said the move will not only make public cleaning more efficient but also directly contribute to reducing road congestion, improving overall quality of life.
The agreement was signed by Transport Malta CEO Kurt Farrugia and Cleansing and Maintenance Director General Ramon Deguara.
