Surge In Patients Admitted To Mater Dei’s Emergency Department As Beds Fill Hospital’s Corridors
Mater Dei has been experiencing a surge in patients in need of help in the Emergency Department as a result of the recent heatwave Malta faced.
As a result, patients have been filling the corridors, many in beds, waiting to be seen.
The Health Ministry said that to ensure that all patients are given the highest level of care, some non-urgent operations are being put on hold and rescheduled for a later date.
They reiterated the best practices to stay safe in the sun and are currently offering respite services for any elderly in need.
One doctor who spoke to Lovin Malta said they had never seen such a situation in the Emergency Department.
At least four people died in Malta in recent days due to heat-related issues, leading to Health Authorities to urge people to stay inside during peak hours and to stay hydrated appropriately.
Nationalist Party Leader Bernard Grech shared an image taken from the Emergency Department on Tuesday night showing patients filling the corridors while on hospital beds.
“For this government, even patients and health workers aren’t a priority. Only those in the inner circle are a priority,” he said.
