An Italian man accused of a series of car robberies in Mġarr and Mosta managed to escape court right before his arraignment, but he was recaptured by the police within an hour.

Giuseppe Condello Borg, 25, was arrested in Mġarr at around 3.15am after police noticed a man which fitted into previous descriptions of a man going around vehicles in a suspicious manner.

When searched by the police, they found him in possession of a screwdriver which could aid in unlocking cars and other vehicles.

He was scheduled to be prosecuted in court this afternoon but managed to escape the building, leading to the suspension of the prosecution.

The charges against Condello Borg were temporarily dropped to allow the prosecution to charge him again following his re-arrest, but with added charges due to the escape.

He was arrested within the hour and brought back to court under tight security, apologizing to magistrate Noel Bartolo and stating that he was afraid and that he had gone back to his wife at their Mġarr home.

Why do you think Condello Borg tried to escape, knowing he will be pressed with more charges?
