Suspects In Shocking Gżira Luggage Case Won’t Be Charged With Murder
The police will not press murder charges against the two men arrested in connection with the shocking Gżira floating suitcase case, as they believe the victim was already deceased when his body was dismembered.
Lead investigator Keith Arnaud held a press conference this morning to deliver an update on the case. He said the man was already dead when his hands and feet were cut off and there were no external signs of violence, with an autopsy indicating he had likely died of asphyxiation.
Although no murder charges will be filed at this stage, the main suspect – a 43-year-old Colombian national – will be charged with drug trafficking, criminal association, hiding a body and trying to cover up a crime.
A Portuguese man who was arrested alongside him will face a number of drug-related charges.
The victim was found with 101 capsules of cocaine in his stomach, leading to suspicion that he might have been a drug mule. Arnaud said the police are working on a number of theories as to why the drugs weren’t removed from his body before it was discarded.
