A 34-year-old man from Swatar has been charged with domestic violence against his former partner – going so far as the refer to another domestic murder in his threats against her.

Wayne Mallia, 34, allegedly threatened to harm his partner while using psychological violence in an incident just two days ago.

The accused and the victim lived together in an apartment in Qormi, and have no children.

During the hearing, the victim revealed that she endured horrific threats from Mallia, including “I’ll cut your throat” and “I’ll do to you what they did to Bernice.” Inspector Audrey Micallef described these as among the worst threats she had ever heard.

Mallia denied all charges, with his defence arguing that the relationship had ended, and he would not approach the victim again. The prosecution did not seek an actual imprisonment sentence, believing it would not be a solution in this case.

After considering the accused’s criminal record and his cooperation with the police, the Court sentenced Mallia to two and a half years of probation and issued a restraining order against him for the same period, barring him from approaching his former partner.

The Court warned him that any violation of the probation or restraining order would result in imprisonment.

This case highlights the devastating impact of domestic violence and the need for stricter measures to be taken against perpetrators.

While having a restraining order in place is all well and good, having a victim who faced deadly threats share the streets with her potential attacker is a risky and dangerous situation – and may lead to another tragedy.

Horrifically, Bernice’s name has become a byword for domestic murder – this case is not the first time someone used her name to threaten their former partner.

What do you make of this sentencing?
