‘Sweaty’ Maltese Man Caught Trying To Smuggle €5 Million Worth Of Drugs To Malta
A Maltese man was arrested in Pozzallo after he was caught trying to smuggle an estimated €5 million worth of heroin and cocaine. His sweat and nervousness gave him away, according to reports.
Twenty-two kilos of cocaine and heroin were stashed in his car, the Malta Independent reported. He was heading from Sicily to Malta and was caught as his car was preparing to board the Jean de la Vallette ferry.
The 49-year-old man kept the drugs “ingeniously” hidden but gave himself away with evident signs of nervousness, shaking hands and profuse sweating, Italian authorities said. When he failed to give a good reason for being in Italy, police unleashed sniffer dogs which confirmed suspicions.
This is reportedly one of the biggest drug hauls Ragusa has ever seen.
Eleven vacuum-packed packets of cocaine and nine packets of heroin were found hidden in a compartment behind the back seats, the bodywork and the passenger cabin, “which could only be accessed by way of a button that raised the back seat with a hydraulic suspension system”.
