Swieqi Deputy Mayor Calls For Compensation For Businesses Left Without Electricity Last Week
Swieqi’s Deputy Mayor Jordan Galea Pace has called for “immediate clarification” on whether shop owners who lost business on Friday due to an hours-long power cut will be compensated.
“This afternoon I visited the shops and residents of Swieqi, who have been left suffering without electricity due to the incompetence of a government with no clear direction or plan. Numerous shops had to close, and residents were unable to stay comfortably at home in the intense heat,” Galea Pace wrote in a statement.
“In light of this situation, I call for immediate clarification on whether compensation will be provided to the shop owners who have lost business today.”
Galea Pace told Lovin Malta that the locality has been experiencing power cuts in different streets all summer but this particular one, on Triq il-Qasam, lasted hours.
“The power was out between 2pm and 9pm and nothing was done. They didn’t even bother to get a generator,” he told the newsroom.
“The shop owners and workers had to just close their doors and wait till the electricity came back. It is unacceptable that such a vital service has been disrupted with no apparent remedy or support for those affected.”
The young councillor has been approached by different frustrated residents throughout the summer, with one allegedly telling him “If I can’t sleep in this heat neither will you”.
In July, Energy Minister Miriam Dalli said that those affected by power cuts earlier this summer would be eligible for compensation through the same system that operated last year.
