Members of the Syrian community of Malta have disassociated themselves from yesterday’s incident in Ħamrun, condemning any kind of violence that occurred.

This comes following a violent brawl which took place in the main street of Ħamrun among a number of Syrians, which led to two people being hospitalised.

“We as Syrians remain committed to living in peace in Maltese society with respect and obedience to the laws of Malta,” the Syrian Solidarity in Malta said in a statement.

“As Syrians in Malta, we are grateful to the Maltese people for the hospitality they offered us after the majority of us asked for asylum because our country is not in a state where we are safe,” it expressed.

“We remain committed to working hand in hand with the Maltese Government so that we have more opportunities to integrate with the Maltese society.”

The Syrian Solidarity in Malta also invited Maltese authorities to meet with them, so that a dialogue can be present in order to move forward and have everyone’s wellbeing at heart.

“We reiterate that there should not be a generalisation on an entire community due to the actions of individuals,” it concluded.

Anti-racist activist Omar Rabahbah also spoke out after the incident, saying that anyone guilty of breaking the law must be punished, and issued a message from within the Syrian community after “sticking his neck out” for them multiple times.

“These actions reflect so poorly on the majority, who are good people.”

What can be done to promote integration?
