Ta’ Xbiex’s seafront will be partially pedestrianised on five weekends this summer as part of an experimental measure by the local council.

The pedestrianised area will stretch from the Ta’ Xbiex Waterpolo Club to the Royal Malta Yacht Club, with traffic and public transport diverted to Triq ir-Rampa.

During these periods of pedestrianisation, the Ta’ Xbiex local council and some commercial outlets will provide live music and entertainment, children’s activities. Free open air fitness classes, free open air line dancing, al fresco dining, cultural exhibitions, outreach programmes and sessions, the Council’s yearly Connecting Through Culture events and other activities.

It will be pedestrianised on Saturdays from 4pm till 10pm on the following Sunday on the following dates – 27th and 28th July, 17th and 18th August, 31st August and 1st September, 12th to 15th September, and 28th to 29th September.

Ta’ Xbiex mayor Max Zammit said the pedestrianisation project is a “dream come true”.

“Ta’ Xbiex lacks open spaces since all the unused land is privately owned and, although many people still consider the Gżira Garden as the Ta’ Xbiex Garden, responsibility for it was passed to the Gżira Local Council around 20 years ago,” he said.

He added that this initiative was planned diligently in a way not to disrupt residents or traffic, while creating a safe open space for all which can be enjoyed by Ta’ Xbiex residents and people who frequent the area.

This initiative is a well-needed shot in the arm for proponents of slow streets after the Mosta local council decided to shelve the partial pedestrianisation of the piazza over the weekend.
