Arsonists targeted a house in Triq Santa Barbara, Rabat at around 1:15am this morning, while an elderly couple and a child with a disability were inside it.
The nine-year-old child had to be escorted out of a window on the first storey while neighbours helped firefighters put out the flames, state broadcaster TVM reported.
No one was injured in the attack, although am ambulance had to be called on site to provide first-aid to the elderly man, who had inhaled a lot of smoke.
However, Jeffrey Pullicino Orlando – chairman of the Malta Council for Science and Technology and former Labour candidate – has suggested the attack could have been linked to the residents’ relationship to him. Namely, the elderly couple are the parents of Pullicino Orlando’s personal driver Steve Ciangura and the child their nephew,
“Why all this hated?” he wrote on his Facebook wall.
If so, it would be the second arson attack targeting Pullicino Orlando in the past three months, after his dental clinic in Haz-Zebbug was burned back in June.
