Pastizzar and PN Tarxien councillor Glenn Gerald Urry was fined a whopping €3,000 after he didn’t hand out a fiscal receipt for a slice of pizza worth €1.70.

The incident occurred in November 2022, before Urry was elected to the local council, and the sentence was handed out earlier this week.

Two tax inspectors were carrying out surprise inspections in Paola and analysed a transaction between the pastizzar and a client from a distance.

After the client had purchased a slice of pizza, the inspectors followed him and asked him to present the receipt. They then walked back to the pastizzeria with him and asked Urry to issue a receipt, which he did.

The inspectors carried out a search of the cash register and found that the last receipt had been issued an hour or so earlier and that the paper roll was still attached to the cash register.

Urry said the paper roll had run out and that he couldn’t keep customers waiting until he replaced it.

However, no mercy was shown to the worker and he was charged with breaching VAT laws.

Earlier this week, Magistrate Yana Micallef Stafrace slapped Urry with a €3,000 fine and his employer with another €3,000 fine – €6,000 in total.

They are appealing the sentence on the grounds that the fine was excessive.
