Team Malta Impresses Again At The Small Nations Games With A 27-Medal Total, Including 6 Gold

The 2019 Games of Small States of Europe (GSSE) took place in Montenegro over the last few days and Malta impressed the crowds and competition yet again, bringing home a grand total of 27 medals over the various events, 6 gold, 12 silver and 9 bronze, to be specific.

And while Team Malta had brought home 29 medals during the last GSSE in 2017, this year’s delegation actually managed to increase on the last appearance’s four-gold performance.

On day one alone, the Maltese athletes managed to bag six medals

Jeremy Saywell won the first medal when he finished second in the Judo competitio, while the swimming team kicked off their shoes to pick up the remaining five medals.

For the men’s team, Harry Stacey took silver in the 100m freestyle event and joined forces with Matthew Galea, Andrew Chetcuti and Dylan Cachia to snag two more silvers in the 4x100m and 4x200m freestyle. Mikhail Umnov then took the bronze medal in the 100 and 200 metre butterfly races.

Alexandra McGonigle also won the silver medal in her 50m breatstroke race, while Andrew Chetcuti picked up a third place in the 50m freestyle event, earning himself another silver medal.

Swimmer

The women’s team also won 2 bronze medals in the 4x100m and 4x200m freestyle race, however it was Mya Azzopardi who stole the local hearts as she smashed the Maltese national record by three full seconds in the 200m individual Medley and earned herself a well-deserved third place.

In the athletics team, Malta made history when they took victory in the 5,000 and 10,000 metre races in both the male and female race with the athletes Jordan Gusman and Lisa Marie Bezzina respectively, to bring home four gold medals

This, however, was not the only double podium finish, as Ian Paul Grech and Claire Azzopardi both took the silver in their triple-jump events. Ian Paul Grech would also go on to earn a bronze medal for his long jump efforts.

Jordan Gusman took home another second place medal in the 1,500 metre race, while Paula Grech and Damien Mizzi earned themselves bronze medals in the 800m and 400m races respectively.

In the shooting team, Eleonor Bezzina and Gianluca Chetcuti impressed the crowd when they won the gold medal in the 10m air pistol competition and double trap event respectively

Meanwhile, William Chetcuti brought home two silver medals in the trap and double trap competition.

In tennis, the Elaine Genovese and Francesca Curmi duo bested most of their competitors to finish in second place for the doubles event, while Elaine Genovese also impressed on her own in the singles matches to win the bronze medal
