Teen Who Died In Titanic Submarine Was ‘Terrified’ But Wanted To Please His Dad On Father’s Day
In a heartfelt attempt to please his father for Father’s Day, a 19-year-old university student tragically lost his life during a submarine expedition to the Titanic.
Despite expressing fears about the journey, Suleman Dawood decided to join his father Shahzada Dawood, a Pakistani businessman, on the ill-fated trip.
According to the U.S. Coast Guard, Shahzada and Suleman were among five victims instantly killed when the OceanGate submersible suffered a catastrophic implosion just 1,600ft from the bow of the Titanic. The other victims included OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush, French Navy veteran Paul-Henri Nargeolet, and British billionaire Hamish Harding.
Azmeh Dawood, Shahzada’s sister and Suleman’s aunt, told NBC News that her nephew had confided in a relative that he “wasn’t very up for” the expedition. However, Suleman felt obliged to join his father, who was deeply passionate about the historic 1912 shipwreck.
“Thinking of Suleman, who is 19, in there, perhaps gasping for breath… It’s been crippling, to be honest.”
Belonging to the renowned Dawood business dynasty in Pakistan, the father-son duo was among the wealthiest in the country, despite residing in Surrey, England. Azmeh, who herself admitted that she wouldn’t have boarded the Titan submersible for a million dollars, voiced her disbelief and grief over the shocking incident.
“Being caught in a really bad film, with a countdown, but you didn’t know what you’re counting down to.”
In a tragic turn of events, Azmeh revealed that she had fallen out of touch with her brother in recent years due to her diagnosis with primary progressive multiple sclerosis in 2014. She had relocated from England to Amsterdam for better access to medical cannabis, a move that her family, including her brother, did not approve of.
