Teenage Labour Councillor Calls For ‘Respect’ After Teenage Activists Insulted

Teenage PL Qormi councillor Martina Grech has urged people not to stoop so low as to try and ridicule activists fighting against the felling of trees.

Referring to the activity of ‘For Our Trees’ that took place at Santa Lucija, Grech stated that “Whether you agree or not with the project it’s your personal decision but please let’s not be this low. You don’t call people “qtates” or upload a picture such as this and just ridicule people”.

This was made as a reference to a troll page on Facebook called ‘Pluke’s Cartoons’ which made a meme insulting the three leading youth activists of the group ‘For Our Trees’.

“Dawn l-erba qtates jiġu jaqgħu u jqumu minnek li trid issuq minn hemm kuljum biex tasal ix-xogħol. L-aqwa s-siġar… X’taħsbu?”

(A bunch of cats who couldn’t care less about those of us who need to drive through the area every day. What’s important is the trees… What do you think?)

Martina stated that she was also a victim of personal attacks during her campaign trail in the local council elections that took place in May this year. She added that this “(shows) that we still cannot understand how democracy works”.

She ended her post by pleading that we should “leave the (person) out and focus on the message. Critique an opinion all you want or object to ideas/arguments but please respect the dignity of a person.”
