A 17-year-old has pleaded not guilty to causing the death of a food courier and driving under the influence in a hit-and-run crash that took place on Sunday.

Times of Malta reported that the teenager, who cannot be named due to his age, is also facing charges of reckless and negligent driving, driving under the influence, overspeeding, and driving without a licence or insurance.

Khim Bahadur Pun, a 42-year-old food courier from Nepal, was tragically killed when a Maserati, allegedly driven by the 17-year-old, collided with his motorbike on Psaila Street at 5.20am.

The teenager, from Qormi, also faces charges of injuring another man in the crash, damaging several vehicles, and fleeing the scene along with two passengers, who were later arrested. His defence lawyer revealed that the teenager took the keys to his father’s car without permission before driving it.

The accused was found several hours later, and police confirmed a breathalyzer result of around 40, which would likely have been higher at the time of the crash.

CCTV footage reportedly shows the teenager walking past the victim without calling for help.

Bail was denied, with Magistrate Charmaine Galea citing concerns about the teenager potentially tampering with evidence and a lack of confidence in his parents’ ability to guarantee his behaviour.

The case remains ongoing, with civilian witnesses yet to testify.
