A year after running over police sergeant Simon Schembri, 17-year-old Liam Debono almost crashed into a car that was being driven by one of his own escort police officers.

Testifying in court today, the officer said he had spotted Debono driving a white BMW while he was off duty in Triq Toni Zahra, Żejtun on the evening of 6th May.

The officer said he had to swerve his car to get out of the way, that he had immediately informed the police control room, but decided not to give chase himself

Asked by Debono’s defence lawyer Victor Bugeja how he could tell the driver was his client, the officer responded that he had seen the teenager’s face on TV and that he had served as his escort officer when he was charged in court.

18 days after the incident, Debono was arrested in Luqa after he was found driving without a license while out on bail for the attempted murder of Simon Schembri. The compilation of evidence against Debono in court concluded today and magistrate Joe Mifsud will deliver his judgement on 26th June.

In May 2018, Debono ran over Simon Schembri in Luqa after the police sergeant stopped him upon finding out he had been driving without a seatbelt or a license. The hit-and-run incident forced Schembri to amputate his arm.
