Transport Minister Ian Borg will hold a social activity tonight and hasn’t ruled out throwing his name in the hat to become Malta’s next Prime Minister.

“Our nation’s successes in recent years boiled down to unity, hard work, humility and a conviction that, with everyone’s participation, we’ll be able to succeed together,” Borg said in a Facebook post.

“With this same commitment, together as a movement, government and people, we will turn every challenge into an opportunity for more wealth, justice, progress and unity.”

No one has yet formally announced their intention to contest the leadership position, although Deputy Prime Minister Chris Fearne and MP Robert Abela have both strongly hinted at their intentions. MEP Miriam Dalli, who has long been touted as a potential successor to Joseph Muscat, has ruled herself out of the running.

Questioned by Lovin Malta about his own intentions, Borg refused to rule out contesting for the position, stating he will communicate his decision when he takes it.

If he gets elected, Borg, 33, will become the youngest Prime Minister in Malta’s history.

Leadership nominations open on Monday and close on Wednesday. A General Conference will be held on 6th and 7th January and, if there are more than two candidates, a vote will be taken. The two candidates who receive the most votes will then face a vote at PL Congress on 11th January.
