‘The Dictator Has Fallen’: Metsola Praising Toppling Of Syrian President Assad
European President Roberta Metsola has praised the Syrian rebels who toppled President Bashar al-Assad in a stunning offensive.
“The Dictator has fallen,” Metsola said. “It is clear that Bashar al-Assad’s brutal 24 year rule of Syria is over as his regime lies in tatters.”
“This is a critical period for the region and for the millions of Syrians who want a free, stable and secure future. What happens in the next hours and days matters.”
“It is dialogue, unity, respect for fundamental rights, international law that must characterise the next steps.”
Assad, who has been President of Syria since 2000, reportedly fled the country a mere 12 days after Islamist militant group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and allied forces launched a major offensive in the north-west of Syria, first capturing Aleppo and then moving downwards to Damascus.
