‘The Facts Have Been Exaggerated’: Ministry Issues Statement Over Naxxar School ‘Butter Knife’ Incident
Media reports about a “butter knife” incident last Tuesday at the Naxxar Middle School have been deemed “exaggerated and distorted” by the Education Ministry.
“Regarding this case, the facts have been exaggerated and any other version is completely incorrect and distorted without verifying the facts, which not only created unnecessary alarm but also undermined the work and commitment of educators in all schools,” the Ministry said in a statement.
The report involved a fight between two 12-year-old girls where one ran into the kitchenette and grabbed a butter knife and chased the other girl. The incident was said to have caused a certain amount of fear among the students and staff.
Regardless, Education Minister Clifton Grima stated that no act of violence is ever tolerated and thanked the educators for immediately and effectively controlling the situation in this incident.
The Ministry’s reaction came after an argument escalated into a fight between two 12-year-old children during the school break.
The fight was immediately stopped by educators who were on supervision duty, and the children were taken directly to the school administration office.
One of the children entered the kitchenette and grabbed a butter knife, but it was immediately confiscated by the supervising educator.
The school administration took action right away, and on the same day, the school administration informed the parents. Apart from disciplinary measures, the students are receiving necessary support in the psychosocial context from the college team.
The Ministry, as always, is taking all measures to provide full support to educators, including in this case. Minister Grima has also requested an investigation into the incident from the school administration while supporting all the steps taken by the school.
