‘The Government Should Compensate Those Affected By Power Outages’: PN Calls For Redress On Energy Failures

The Nationalist Party has urged the government to address the power cut situation, lamenting about the hardships it brings about to families and businesses alike.

“The least the government can do is compensate the victims of the lack of responsibility of Robert Abela’s government, resulting from frequent electricity service interruptions,” the PN said during a press conference.

This was the core of the message during a press conference addressed by the Energy and Enterprise Spokesperson Mark Anthony Sammut and the Social Policy Spokesperson David Agius.

“The Labour Party, in 2013, promised to regenerate the energy sector. Instead of fulfilling that promise, they wasted it. In 2022, Miriam Dalli claimed that the frequency and duration of power outages would be significantly reduced, but the situation is not as promised.”

“This is not what the Labour Party pledged, and now the country is experiencing even more blackouts in several locations, lasting for over 12 hours.”

“The Nationalist Party, on the other hand, proposed various solutions for the energy sector, including substantial investments in the energy distribution system to ensure a stable distribution network meeting today’s needs. However, the Labour Party ignored these proposals and failed to implement a common strategy for development and distribution.”

Among others, the Nationalist Party is proposing:

  1. Implementing an automatic compensation process for those who suffer from prolonged power outages and unstable voltage for a certain number of hours, as proposed in 2021.
  2. Making significant investments in the network and distribution infrastructure.

“It should be remembered that since the construction of the Electrogas power station, Panama companies were involved, risky banking guarantees were given, we bought expensive electricity, and we bought expensive gas.”

“Our institutions were weakened, and journalists were silenced. All this so that a few people could pocket €5,000 each day from secret companies. It should also be noted that if the millions invested by the government in Vitals and Steward were invested in this sector, we would not be experiencing all these problems. We would not be experiencing power cuts.”

“All this is being borne by the Enemalta workers, who work long hours, the elderly, the sick, farmers, children, and many others.”

“This is not the quality of life that the Maltese and Gozitans deserve, and thus, the least the government can do is compensate those affected and invest properly in the energy sector.”

Do you think the government should compensate people who suffer during these powercuts?
