A department store in Mosta has pledged to figure out what happened and apologised following an alleged incident where a store worker told a dog owner to eat her dog.

“Dear all, we clearly did not mean for any of this to go in harm’s way or be offensive to all dog lovers… we apologise for the misunderstanding and clarify that one of the staff and not the ‘owner’ described a joke and it went wrong, once again we apologise and do not want a fight or argument especially during Christmas time, once again we apologise,” Xing Long Department Store posted on social media.

Their message came after a number of people began leaving negative reviews following one woman’s alleged incident.

“Went to get some Christmas stuff from Xing Long shop and the owner told me that Sophie is good to cut her head off and eat her. I offended him, put everything down and got out – I will never go there again!” the woman posted.

“Disgusting indeed and should be reported. Please share as its a serious matter,” said another person sharing the story.

Regular customers of the store were taken aback by the comment.

“Really surprised. Every time we walked to the shop we were treated with respect. Staff was always very helpful,” said one person.

“I’m sure it was a language barrier. I’ve taken my dog with me there and was always treated with respect,” said another.

“It’s extremely hard to take this as real as they are so friendly and I always go with my dogs there, in fact the owner comes to pet them…”

Others wondered if it was all due to a misunderstanding.

The store ended by clarifying that it welcomes pets in the store, and pledged to find out who had make the remark to the customer.
