The Malta Customs Department has announced a long list of seizures from the last week after a serious effort to clamp down on contraband goods passing through Maltese borders has borne fruits.

In the last few days alone, Maltese officers found €40,135 in cash hidden away in three separate cases while conducting searches by both sea and air. Aside from the money, officers also seized 22,677 cigarettes, 5,966 plastic bags, 1,639 unused excise stamps, 18 kgs of tobacco, 1,082 bottles of non-alcoholic beverages, 677 bottles of wine, and 113 bottles of spirits.

Aside from border searches, much of the contraband goods were found through routine searches in various localities, including Żebbug, Qormi, Rabat, St Paul’s Bay, Sliema, St Julian’s and Paceville.

Officers obtained these items after discovering the infringing items being offered for sale among other non-contraband items.

“The Customs Department’s Enforcement Unit has been clamping down on the sale of illicit goods, in an effort to hamper contraband operations and collect the taxes owed, which is being charged to the end consumer,” the Department said in an official statement this morning.

This haul comes after a Customs sniffer dog was applauded for finding over €16,000 in undeclared cash just last month.
