I’m sure this isn’t the White Christmas some of us asked for…

In the early hours of Boxing Day, Customs officials from the Container Monitoring Unit detected 90 kilos of cocaine (split into two containers) with a street value of almost €10 million. Each container was holding around 40 packets of cocaine weighing a total of 42kg.

Both vessels, (under the pretence of carrying bananas) were transitting through the Malta Freeport, from Ecuador en route to Thessaloniki, Greece.

Shortly after, the Police Anti Drug Squad took over with Duty Magistrate Gabriella Vella and a team of experts from the Police Forensics Unit leading the investigations.

The department said: “This is a remarkable year for Customs, in terms of Narcotics busts, with the last quarter of the year being the busiest, and most successful, ever. Indeed, the Nuctech scanner has proven very critical to the Customs Department in its fight against all sort of illegality, especially trafficking of narcotics,”.

This is another big find, three months ago 10,000-11,000kg of cannabis resin was found in containers with the value of approximately €28.5 million.
