‘The Writing Is On The Wall’: Outgoing PL Deputy Leader Predicts Malta Will Legalise Abortion
In his final speech as PL deputy leader for party affairs, Daniel Micallef made a bold prediction – Malta will legalise abortion someday.
“It’s not in our manifesto but the writing is on the wall for those who want to read it,” Micallef told the PL’s general conference last week.
“You know what my personal opinion is. Whether politicians want it or not, abortion will be legalised in Malta someday.”
He urged the PL not to ignore the abortion issue and gave a bit of advice on how the party should tackle it.
“I know that there is a spectrum of opinions on this issue within the PL but I appeal for a climate of respect where everyone is comfortable to express their position. If we are going to work to convince people, we must do so through the strength of arguments and not through fatalism or by adopting an attitude of false superior intellectualism.”
“However, just because it’s a tough issue, we cannot act as though it doesn’t exist and that society isn’t already discussing it. It’s important for the party to participate in civil society.”
Micallef’s successor as PL deputy leader for party affairs, Alex Agius Saliba, has often stressed that he is against the legalisation of abortion.
