‘There Was No Other Way’: Contractor Company Comments On Open Msida Trench

VC Group, a contracting company, said there was no way to fill massive trenches in Msida other than by leaving them exposed.

“The barriers were removed in order for the truck to fill up the trench,” a representative of the company told Lovin Malta.

“There was no other way of filling it. As soon as the job was done, the barriers were put back in place, that is on both sides.”

Meanwhile, an Enemalta spokesperson confirmed that this was part of a 10km-reinforcement being carried out between Swatar and Msida.

The road barriers were temporarily removed to allow the cement mixer to pass through and place a layer of sand and concrete. This was done under the supervision of enforcement officers and with full attention to motorists’ safety, the spokesperson said.

Images sent to Lovin Malta show exposed trenches along Triq il-Wied, Msida. After publishing the images, VC Group confirmed that barriers were put back up.

This morning, a commuter told Lovin Malta that buses and cars were driving mere centimetres away from the gaping hole while people squeezed in between. Busgoers even had to jump over trenches to get to the bus stop as there was no bridge connecting one side to the other, the person said.
