Four men behind violent attacks on the elderly, hospitalising some of the victims as well as carrying out a string of robberies have been sentenced in court.

The four men received 13 years imprisonment between them; William Kelly Harrison, 29, who resided in Valletta was sentenced to four years and four months; Priviledge Mupimhidzi, 35, from Zimbabwe was sentenced to four and a half years imprisonment; Ahmed Ali Salah Lawan, 30, from Libya living in Żurrieq was sentenced to two years and eight months and Deko Susanto, 32, from Indonesia, received an 18 month prison sentence.

The case revolved around a number of crimes carried out on 20th September, 2020, including violent robberies in Pieta’ and neighbouring areas.

In some of the robberies, elderly people were beaten, with some needing medical attention after the fact.

The four men also beat up a 68-year-old man after stopping him to ask for a cigarette as well as robbing him of €40 in a case that was made public by the man’s daughter.

She said two of the men then grabbed his father’s hands, while a third one punched and kicked him in the face, before they robbed him of €40.

“One often hears about these things, but you believe them more when it impacts you directly,” she had said, before thanking the police for tracking down the culprits.

While searching for the culprits, the police spotted one of them in Triq Mountbatten, Pietà, and the culprit started running as soon as he saw them. Police gave chase and arrested him in Triq San Ġorġ Preca.

Two other men matching the victim’s description were arrested by the RIU in Triq Joe Gasan, Tal-Pietà.

Police then received a report by a youth, who said he had also been assaulted and robbed by three men who matched the suspects’ description, and they were also notified that another elderly man had been assaulted by the same people.

Stolen goods were found on the suspects and further interrogation of the three men led police to a fourth man, who was promptly arrested.
