This EU Vote Could Make Hand Luggage Fees A Thing Of The Past

Ever find a really cheap flight in Europe, only to find the price doubles when you add hang luggage fees? This could be a thing of the past after an upcoming EU vote that will ensure passengers can carry cabin baggage free of charge.
An official vote on whether to adopt a resolution will take place in October, following The European Parliament’s Committee on Petition’s unanimous adoption of a resolution that calls on airlines to simplify ticket pricing for air travel and rid of often hidden cabin baggage fees.
It builds upon a ruling on hand luggage made by the European Court of Justice in 2014.
The EU seeks to solve two issues with air travel: airlines across the bloc have different policies on hand luggage, with unclear advertising means that hidden fees or confusion is often linked to buying flight tickets.
Back in 2014, the European Court of Justice rules that cabin baggage which adheres to “reasonable” sizes was essetnial for air travel. It decided that passengers shouldn’t pay extra for luggage that can fit in the cabin.
However, the decision was never enforced.
This new resolution will enforce the ruling, ridding of any extra charges, and clarifying what “reasonable” size and weight for luggage in the cabin hold is.
More upfront information about additional costs, like charges for seat allocation and flight timing will also be pushed.
This year, Spain’s Ministry of Consumer Affairs launched a probe into multiple low-cost airlines in Europe over hand luggage prices. It argued that separating luggage fees from the total price was misleading, meaning carriers can offer more competitive prices that didn’t reflect total costs.
Others in the EU believe low-cost airlines should be banned.
France is seeking support from its EU peers for a minmum price to cut flight carbon emissions.
French Transport Minister Clément Beaune was the first to propose the idea of scrapping super-cheap fares, in an effort to “fight against social and environmental dumping” and that “€10 plane tickets aren’t possible anymore”.
What do you make of the resolution?
