A Valletta restaurant has sparked controversy after leaving tables, chairs, and umbrellas out in the middle of Merchants Street, disrupting the St Joseph procession and forcing participants to squeeze through.

Valletta Mayor Olaf McKay didn’t hold back, calling out the Tanadia restaurant for ignoring instructions to clear the street.

Taking to Facebook, he described the situation as “cowboy behaviour” and confirmed he had reported it to the police, who promptly intervened.

“This behaviour has gone too far; it has reached its limit,” McKay wrote, tagging the Malta Tourism Authority, the Malta Police Force and the Lands Authority.

Meanwhile, the restaurant’s manager spoke to Times of Malta and claimed the issue was simply a misunderstanding, saying they believed the procession had already passed before putting tables and chairs back out.
