This Teenage Maltese Musician Has Released Three Songs All From A Bedroom Recording Studio

Krista Šujak, a 14-year-old musician from Malta has released three songs, and she’s doing it all from a recording studio built in her own bedroom.

Music has been the focus of Krista’s life since the tender age of five. And with good reason. Her talents and hard work led her to feature in several festivals both locally and abroad, festivals including the Junior Sanremo in Italy.

But her career took a serious lift after she engaged in a music production course two years ago. A course that motivated her enough to build her own recording studio at home.

Only then was she able to produce her first song – Għalik Missier (For You Father) – that she unveiled on Father’s Day in 2021.

Later that year, she launched Bl-Indipendenza (With Independence), which was performed live at Konkonrs Kanzunetta Indipendenza Junior (2021), making it all the way to the final round.

Earlier this month, however, Krista released her third – Help Her. A song that she wrote when she was just 11 years old but had been shelved for having a lack of resources to produce it.

Launching the song came with its own challenges. Because even though she wrote it, its production – which included a music video – needed regular input from an expert in the music industry who resides in Argentina.

And that meant that the whole thing was made through a series of online calls and correspondence, centred around busy work and school schedules, and of course, COVID-19-related hiccups.

“Help Her is about loneliness, and isolation from the world, and for this reason, it was titled ‘Help Her’. For us to remember not to neglect whoever may be in this situation.”

“It was quite difficult to manage everything because we were both very busy. But I am satisfied,” Krista told Lovin Malta. “I am happy to see that there is an improvement with each new song.”

“I still have lots to learn. But each production is an experience on its own. By having my own studio, I can record vocals as well, aside from my own harmonies, which include backing vocals. And I can spend hours in the studio experimenting with different styles.”

Help Her became her first single accessible from Spotify, iTunes, YouTube, TikTok, and a host of other platforms.

Krista has hit the ground running in a potentially colourful music career within our Maltese shores, and with her devoting more time to her craft, we can now look forward to more of her fine works hitting our ears in the coming months.
