Three men were rescued by a passing dinghy after their speedboat had capsized off the coast of Xlendi, Gozo yesterday.
Jesmond Ciantar, of St Julian’s had been out with his wife on their dinghy when they spotted the overturned hull of a vessel at around 5pm with someone waving nearby, according to Times of Malta. The sinking vessel had also been spotted by a second dinghy carrying a number of Gozitans.
Both boats arrived on scene and found one of the men was unconscious and had slipped below the surface after being pulled up by one of the remaining two stranded men.
Having arrived in the nick of time, Ciantar pulled the unconscious man onto his dinghy while the second boat carrying the Gozitans had taken on the other two who were still responsive.
All three men were injured, particularly the unconscious man, who had suffered a wound to his head.
Both vessels then headed back to Xlendi where the three men were transferred to hospital.
Ciantar praised the man’s friend for putting the needs of his peers before his own and pushing through his own injuries to assist the other man who had fallen unconscious.
All three men are currently undergoing treatment in Gozo Hospital, where the man who was unconscious has been deemed to be in a grievous condition.
The cause of the capsize is currently unknown, however Magistrate Paul Coppini will be holding an inquiry.
