Three suspended police constables accused of using excessive violence among other failures of duty will be charged in court later today, the police force has said.

The charges are believed to stem from using excessive violence when dealing with migrants, with the beatings only coming to light after another officer reported them.

One of the three officers is currently in hospital after he reportedly fell ill; he will be charged once released.

During a press conference today, Police Commissioner Angelo Gafa said that last Friday police authorities were informed of the allegations against the trio, who were working at the Ħamrun police station. The three of them were arrested later that day.

It is worth noting the report came from another officer, and not the victims in question.

Gafa said the corps would be taking the allegations with the utmost seriousness, saying that investigations into the claims began immediately.

They are expected to be charged in court today at around noon.
