Three Weeks Since Fatal Bormla Collapse And No Arrests Have Been Made
There have been no arrests so far in connection to the fatal Bormla collapse that left one Gambian worker dead and another Maltese construction worker hospitalised.
A construction and excavation site in Bormla was the centre of tragedy on the 23rd July when a rubble wall collapsed, leading to investigators looking into whether the method statement was followed correctly.
Heavy machinery pictured on-site has raised concerns that the development’s method statement detailing the dismantling of party walls was not followed properly, potentially leading to the death of one man.
Sources said the method statement clearly outlines that a chainsaw trencher would be used to cut any rock close to party walls to limit any damage.
Only small machinery would be permitted while the dismantling of masonry walls will only happen by hand without the aid of machinery.
This is the second construction tragedy to claim a life in 2020 after Miriam Pace died when her home, which neighboured an excavation site, collapsed. Four men, including the project’s architect and excavator, have been charged over the incident.
According to the figures, the construction sector is the most deadly industry in Malta.
A magisterial inquiry into the incident is ongoing.
