Times Of London Publishes Three-Page Spread About Malta’s Political Crisis
Malta’s political crisis has hit the international press, with The Times of London dedicating a three-page spread to the raft of charges issued against several current and former politicians.
The Times of London focused on how Daphne Caruana Galizia had flagged the Vitals deal as “shady” way back in 2016 and included a quote by her sister Corinne Vella about how the assassinated journalist was “right all along”.
“The scandal is the latest blow to the island, which has grown rich on online gambling, rampant construction and selling EU passports to oligarchs,” it wrote.
Euronews focused on how Deputy Prime Minister Chris Fearne remains Malta’s choice for European Commissioner despite being charged on suspicion of misappropriation and fraud.
The Telegraph wrote that the Maltese government has been plunged into “turmoil”, while Politico said the country’s “political elite” is facing a reckoning. They also reached out to the European Central Bank in light of the charges against Central Bank Governor and former Finance Minister Edward Scicuna, but the ECB declined to comment.
Reuters also focused on the charges against Scicluna.
What action should the government take in light of this scandal?
