Too Many Cabs In Malta? Driver Shares Shocking Photo Showing Density In Bugibba
The popularity of ride-hailing apps and an influx of new drivers into the cab industry is creating a squeeze on Malta’s cab services, with some drivers beginning to question the sustainability of their profession.
A Facebook post to the group “Y Plate Owners and Drivers Malta” provides a first-hand account of the situation.
For those unaware, Y Plate is a term used to identify Maltese taxi cars, based on their license plates ending with a ‘Y’.
The post, accompanied by a screenshot depicting an extreme concentration of available cabs in the seaside town of Bugibba, paints a rather worrying picture of the industry.
The driver who posted the message has been working with Bolt, a popular ride-hailing platform, for nearly three years.
“I have never seen a busy year like this,” the driver admits. “I feel sad for those self-employed drivers who invest €30,000 to €40,ooo, but this industry isn’t worth it anymore.”
“If this is the summer, then imagine the winter,” the driver commented, referring to the traditional decrease in demand for taxi services during the colder months… let alone with the number of vehicles on the road increasing by the day,
Do you think Malta’s roads have hit full capacity?
