‘Totally Unacceptable’: Abela Slams Delays In JeanPaul Sofia Inquiry Conclusion In Letter To Chief Justice

Prime Minister Robert Abela has sent a letter to the Chief Justice urging for the magisterial inquiry into the death of JeanPaul Sofia to conclude urgently.
Four months on since Sofia’s death, Magistrate Marseanne Farrugia’s inquiry is still ongoing – something Abela said was “totally unacceptable”.
“Considering the sensitivity of the case, this is totally unacceptable, especially taking into account the efficiency that the courts under your jurisdiction consistently demonstrate,” Abela said in a letter to Chief Justice Mark Chetcuti, which the government has now published.
“The Inquiring Magistrate has all the necessary resources at her disposal, including the required technical experts,” he continued.
“Therefore, I kindly request that, exercising your powers and prerogatives, you ensure that this magisterial inquiry is concluded so that justice can be served and whoever was responsible for the incident can be held accountable.”
The letter comes just hours after a small tribute to Sofia that his mother placed outside Castille yesterday evening was removed shortly after it was erected.
JeanPaul Sofia’s mother Isabelle Bonnici reacted in disappointment to the development but pledged not to lose heart asking for a public inquiry into the circumstances surrounding her son’s death at a Kordin construction site last December.
“I will keep on insisting on a public inquiry until my last breath to ease the pain of those families whose relatives lose their lives at work. I don’t want my son to have died for nothing.”
