Tourists visiting Malta during the month of September spent way over €300 million, as the month marked a remarkable surge in tourism for the islands.

According to NSO, the total number of inbound tourists in September reached an estimated 299,190, showcasing a substantial increase of 20.2% compared to September 2022, all sharing a total expenditure of €311 million.

This influx of visitors not only highlights Malta’s growing appeal as a travel destination but also signifies a robust rebound from previous global challenges that impacted travel.

Looking at the broader picture, from the months of January to September 2023, Malta welcomed 2,285,450 inbound tourists.

The total nights spent during this period exceeded 15.7 million, underlining the sustained interest in the island nation throughout the year.

The total tourism expenditure for the first three quarters of 2023 was a staggering €2.1 billion, with an average expenditure per capita standing at €908.

A trend was also observed was the preference for rented accommodation establishments, which accounted for 82.5% of the total guest nights.

Tourists in September 2023 spent a total of 2,156,577 nights in Malta, suggesting an extended average duration of stay.

This comes as Malta’s International Airport has just released figures related to passenger traffic in October reaching over 770,000 people, as Malta continues to see an increase in tourism numbers.
