Transport Malta Closes Off Mosta Village Square To Traffic On Friday And Saturday Evenings

Transport Malta has announced that it will close off the Mosta village square to traffic on Friday and Saturday evenings.

The new PN-led Mosta council had reversed a decision by the previous PL council to pedestrianise the square, citing complaints of heavy traffic and struggling business. Meanwhile, a consultation process on traffic management with residents and businesses was initiated.

However, Transport Malta has now decided to overrule this decision and close off the square to traffic again on Friday and Saturday evenings. Since it is an arterial road, it has the power to make this decision.

The Mosta council criticised Transport Malta for overruling what the council feels is best for the residents of Mosta.

The Government’s policy, which is being called ‘pedestrianisation’, cannot be applied without planning and consultation because what will be happening is to the detriment of the residents,” it said.

“This is because of the particular nature of the Mosta Square, that, it is not only a square, but a main artery for traffic. When it is closed off for traffic, traffic will shift to residential roads instead.”

“The Mosta Local Councill will continue to work in the best interests of their residents and will not let any authority use its power to intimidate the Mosta Local Council.”
