Transport Malta Officers Who Beat Up Man In Marsa Receiving Half Pay During Suspension

Two Transport Malta officials who were suspended after they were filmed beating up a man in Marsa are currently receiving half their salary.

Questioned by PN MP Adrian Delia in Parliament last night, Transport Minister Aaron Farrugia confirmed that the officials – Rene Antonelli and Ivan Cassar – are on half pay as per a collective agreement that was signed with the union representing Transport Malta’s workers.

This is indeed common practice at the national transport regulator; three officials who were recently charged over an alleged driving test racket have also been suspended on half pay.

Antonelli and Cassar were filmed beating up a driver as he was lying down in the middle of the road in Qormi Road, Marsa.

While the reason behind this behaviour is as yet unknown, a person on site told Lovin Malta that he heard the Transport Malta officers discuss how they had chased the man for a long time due to concern that he was drink-driving.

Although the incident occurred on 26th October, it was only made public when Lovin Malta published the footage on 15th November.

Questioned by Delia, Farrugia said he didn’t have any prior knowledge of the incident before it was published in the media and that the two officials were suspended the morning after.

An internal Transport Malta investigation took place to establish the facts, while police investigations are ongoing.
