Transport Malta Officials Filmed Beating Man Identified As Rene Antonelli And Ivan Cassar
Two officials involved in the beating of a man filmed in a shocking new video have been identified as Rene Antonelli and Ivan Cassar.
Antonelli is a Transport Malta official who was photographed several times with Foreign Affairs Minister Ian Borg in the past.
A video shared by Lovin Malta shows Antonelli and Cassar brutally punching a motorist laying flat and defenceless in the middle of a road in Marsa on 26th October at around 9.30pm.
They have both been suspended from their jobs.
Photos on Antonelli’s Facebook page show the former Transport Minister and Antonelli at several public and private events, according to Times of Malta. These photos are not publicly available.
Meanwhile, Times of Malta have reported that Antonelli was one of Borg’s election canvassers.
One particularly interesting image shows Antonelli rocking a t-shirt with Borg’s name as he stands gleefully near the minister.
Lovin Malta contacted Borg for a comment and is awaiting his response.
The video, that is currently under internal investigation, shows a man laying with his arms outstretched in the road. An officer, believed to be Antonelli ran to the man and began viciously punching him in the head. He was immediately joined by his colleague.
Fellow Transport Malta officials soon entered the scene trying to deescalate the situation by restraining the aggressive yellow-vested colleague.
While the reason behind this behaviour is as yet unknown, a person on site said he heard the Transport Malta officers discuss how they had chased the man for a long time due to concern that he was drink-driving.
However, he warned it still doesn’t excuse the officers for physically hitting him.
Contacted by Lovin Malta, Transport Malta said it has launched an internal investigation into the case and has formally asked the police to investigate.
A police spokesperson confirmed that an investigation has been opened.
