Transport Malta has issued a warning to Y-plate electric and hybrid vehicle drivers, stating that they are not permitted to use public charging points for more than an hour.

They said that any driver caught breaking this regulation will be considered in breach of the rules and subjected to enforcement action.

It is believed there are around 1,200 registered electric and hybrid Y-plate vehicles in Malta.

“It is reiterated that this 60-minute charging duration equally applies to electric vehicles registered under Subsidiary Legislation 499.68,” the notice said.

“As per Regulation 17(2)(a) of this Subsidiary Legislation, the utilisation of on-street parking spaces, including electric vehicle charging bays, is classified as public road usage and does not constitute off-street garaging.”

“Consequently, Light Passenger Transport Vehicles must also adhere to the 60-minute time limit while occupying these spaces in order to remain in compliance with the regulatory framework.”

“Failure to comply with this directive will result in enforcement actions, including but not limited to fines and other penalties as stipulated under the applicable legislation.”

“LPTS operators are advised to take the necessary measures to ensure adherence to these regulations and to inform their drivers and fleet managers accordingly. The Authority remains committed to the enforcement of legal provisions.”
