PL MP Naomi Cachia condemned Opposition Leader Bernard Grech’s recent abortion speech in Parliament, dubbing it as a “misogynistic” one that neither her nor any “traumatised woman” will ever forget.

“He didn’t even have the decency to call Andrea Prudente by her name. He stomped on her and rode a bandwagon of misogyny to try and cast doubt on her story,” Cachia said in a Facebook post.

“Are they really lacking in credible arguments based on facts in regards to the government’s new amendment that they have to rely on narratives of fear and ridicule?”

Cachia went on to say that neither she nor any other woman who has endured a traumatising experience that people refused to believe will forget “this episode”.

“The last weeks have continued to remind us how much we have left to do – as a society and as politicians.”

“The best part is that, according to NET News, after the discussion he [Grech] went on to talk about the MNPN’s activity on violence against women. Will we ever be able to take him seriously?”

This post comes after Grech’s controversial speech about abortion, furing which he lashed out at Andrea Prudente in Parliament, mocked her surname and cast doubt on her version of events.

During the speech, Grech argued that Prudente was on a “babymoon” which that meant that she was aware that she was carrying a baby not a foetus or a ball of cells – framing his words in a way which insinuates that she had little regard or desire of what was growing inside of her.

He moreover refused to acknowledge that she wanted a child – the whole point of her stay in Malta was to celebrate its conception.

However, her pregnancy turned out to be unviable and she suffered a miscarriage.

Hence, she needed an abortion but was told to wait until the heartbeat faded away or until her health situation became more critical – a gamble that she did not want to take.

Subsequently, she travelled to Spain and was given an emergency abortion.

Grech argued that her babymoon ended once she travelled to Spain, but really, it ended in Malta – when the hope of a new addition to her family died and her life was put secondary to archaic laws.

Since this whole ordeal, the island has been shaken up and the government has decided to introduce abortion for cases where the mother’s life or health is at risk.

Prudente and her husband have also decided to open two libel cases against former MP Jason Azzopardi and academic Simon Mercieca after they accused the couple of essentially duping the Maltese system to help usher in abortion through the back door.

Do you think Bernard Grech’s comments were misogynistic?
