Tributes are flooding in for the late Christian Degabriele, the father and soldier that tragically lost his life while diving.

Degabriele was found dead earlier today after a search and rescue operation was ongoing by the Armed Forces of Malta and the Police.

“I salute the memory of Sergeant Christian Degabriele, a hardworking member of the Maritime Squad of the Armed Forces of Malta, who lost his life while diving in St Paul’s Bay,” Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri wrote.

“What a misfortune that he lost his life so early and at sea, the place which was part of his career and his passion,” he said.

“I offer my condolences to his family and all his colleagues at AFM in this very difficult moment.”

Degabriele was also involved in the amateur Kordin Stars football club, with members expressing that the club will never be the same again.

“More than five years playing beside you, sometimes as our Captain. Kordin Stars will never be the same again,” one wrote.

“Rest in peace Christian Degabriele, you will remain in our hearts. Condolences to his family,” Paola Kordin Football Club wrote on social media.

The Malta Amateur Football Association (MAFA) also brought forward its condolences, saying that “amateur football lost a gentleman”.

The GWU for Disciplined Forces, Security & Law Enforcement Officers Section also offered condolences and solidarity with the family.

“Everyone is describing him as an exemplary soldier that was always willing to help others,” it expressed.

Beloved father and soldier Degabriele was just identified as the diver who lost his life, after going missing yesterday at around 5.30pm.

Rest in Peace Christian Degabriele
